LONDON | 7 October 2026

Athena Re, the London-based specialist insurance and reinsurance MGA, is pleased to announce that it has been approved as a Lloyd’s Coverholder. This marks a significant milestone in the company’s development and its ambition to bring highly rated global insurance capacity closer to high-growth emerging markets.

Coverholder at Lloyd’s
What It Means to Be a Lloyd’s Coverholder

A Lloyd’s Coverholder is a company authorised by Lloyd’s managing agents to enter into contracts of insurance and issue policy documents on behalf of Lloyd’s syndicates, under a binding authority agreement. For brokers and their clients, this means direct access to the financial strength and security of the Lloyd’s market, delivered by an underwriting partner with deep local market knowledge.

A Flagship Cyber Insurance Binder

As part of this development, Athena Re will operate a flagship Cyber Insurance binder backed by A+ rated Lloyd’s capacity, providing specialist cyber risk solutions designed for the evolving needs of businesses and financial institutions across emerging markets. More product lines will follow in the coming months.

A Word From Our CEO

Mr Chrispin Onyancha, Chief Executive Officer of Athena Re, said:

“I am extremely proud of what the Athena Re team has achieved over the past nine months. Reaching Lloyd’s Coverholder status in such a short period is a significant milestone for a young company, but the journey has been about much more than obtaining an approval. It has been nine months of learning, challenges, perseverance and building the foundations of a business that we believe can make a meaningful difference to emerging markets.

“Athena Re was built around a simple idea: that the markets experiencing some of the strongest economic growth should have better access to high-quality insurance capacity and specialist underwriting expertise. Our ambition is to bring A+ rated Lloyd’s & Company market capacity to the doorstep of those who need it most, while using our local market knowledge to develop solutions that are relevant to the risks businesses actually face.”

The Next Chapter

The company’s broader ambition is to establish Athena Re as a one-stop platform for specialised risk solutions across emerging markets, connecting local demand with global insurance and reinsurance capacity.

The Lloyd’s Coverholder approval therefore represents not an end point, but the beginning of the next chapter in Athena Re’s journey.
